The Strip Harvest Technique
The strip harvest technique is the traditional method of follicular hair transplant. While the patient is under a local or mild sedative, the surgeon will remove a strip of the scalp including the hair and follicles from the back or side of your head. This strip is usually very narrow, (about a third of an inch), but its length can vary from a few inches or run from ear to ear.
Once the scalp strip is harvested, the wound is cleaned and closed with sutures using a technique to maximize healing and reduce scarring. These sutures will stay in place for about 10 days when the surgeon will remove them. While some hair will grow back through the strip that was removed, the surrounding hair will cover the scar as long as it is kept at least an inch or so long.
The main advantage of the strip harvest technique is the lower cost compared to the follicular unit extraction method.
Follicular Unit Extraction Technique
While the strip harvest method removes a strip of scalp the follicular unit extraction technique removes individual hair follicles from the back of the head. Before new technology came along, surgeons had to use manual punch tools to extract the follicle. The punches used only removed a plug of 1mm or smaller which meant the process was time-consuming and labor intensive.

In contrast to the strip harvest method, the follicular unit extraction leaves no linear scar on the back of the head. Additionally, since there is no incision made, there is no need for sutures or staples and no scarring. The recovery time is faster and discomfort minimal.
