Rhinoplasty is the medical term referring surgery of the nose. While mostly known for its goal of enhancing facial symmetry and proportions (cosmetic rhinoplasty), rhinoplasty can also be performed for functional or clinical reasons (functional rhinoplasty).
Most patients who come in for a rhinoplasty want to enhance their facial features cosmetically. This means they want to correct, for example, a nose hump, a crooked nose, or even the size of their nose.
Nose is often the center-piece of one’s face. However, it is seldom considered the focal point of attention. During social interaction, focal points are often the eyes and the lips, whereas the nose should serve as a central feature of the face that maintains proportional harmony for the other facial features. If one’s nose has overbearing appearance, it may stand out and overwhelm the other facial features. Re-establishing the harmony and proportion helps improve the self-image and confidence, and this should be the key goal in cosmetic rhinoplasty
Many people are surprised to find that there are medical benefits to the rhinoplasty procedure. Patients who suffer from sleep apnea, snoring, or even a collapsed nasal valve can benefit, as well as those who have difficulty breathing while sleeping or exercising. Oftentimes, individuals decide to add a cosmetic component to their procedure, while undergoing a functional rhinoplasty. While the functional part of the procedure may be covered by insurance, the cosmetic portion is elective and most likely will not be covered. During the initial consultation, patient should express their interest in adding on the cosmetic improvement if they wish. The fees associated with the cosmetic add-on will be disclosed at the visit.
What to Expect
Patients coming in for a functional rhinoplasty procedure should expect to go through an examination prior to surgery. Patients coming in for a cosmetic procedure should bring up all areas of concern during their consultation, so that the procedure may produce the best results possible.
