What is CoolSculpting®?
Cryolipolysis, best known as Coolsculpting®, is one of the newest techniques of noninvasive fat reduction and is gaining popularity by the media and consumers. Traditionally, it was offered as a nonsurgical way to reduce fat around the waistline, and now it is being also utilized in reducing fat under the chin.
The technique of cryolipolysis was based on observation described in the 1970s, when sucking on a popsicle resulted in some infants with nodules on their cheeks caused by the brief destruction of fat-tissue. Subsequently, it was determined that fat-rich tissues are more susceptible to cold injury than surrounding water-rich tissue. In 2007, the term cryolipolysis was introduced as a way to reduce fat tissue by applying a cool temperature while sparing surrounding tissues like the skin, nerves, vessels, and muscles.
Is CoolSculpting® Safe?
While cryolipolysis is considered a very safe treatment, there are some common complications associated with the treatment, including redness at the treatment site (up to 1 week), bruising (1-2 weeks), swelling (1-2 weeks), and sensitivity (up to 4 weeks).
In an ideal candidate, cryolipolysis is an effective and safe treatment option for fat reduction of the neck. In addition to cryolipolysis, there are several other options for neck contouring, such as Kybella®, and each treatment offers its comparative advantages and disadvantages.
