Cheek Augmentation to Restore the Youthful Facial Contour

Face shape should be considered for patients who are considering cheek augmentation, as this plays an important role in the capacity to improve facial balance. With the aging process, the face can lose the volume at the cheek (the area below the cheekbone) through loss or downward migration of the fat-soft tissue padding the cheekbone. The use of dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm Voluma® may not be a practical option because 1. fillers dissolve over time, and 2. the amount of filler (and the cost) needed to see the result can add be significant. Cheek implants, in the long run, may be more economical, and the outcome is more predictable and permanent.

Cheek Augmentation for Hollow and Thin Faces

In most cases, dermal fillers do not produce adequate volume enhancement in patients with hollow and thin faces. The amount of product that is required makes the option cost-prohibitive and less than ideal. Cheek implant designs offer a greater variety of shapes and sizes for augmenting the cheek area in patients with long or oblong faces. Dermal fillers may be used to supplement the augmentation and refine the results. The addition of volume in the cheek area gives the appearance of a hollow face that more closely matches an oval face shape by changing the proportion between facial length and width.

Cheek Augmentation Procedure

The implants for cheek augmentation are selected based on individual patient anatomy and facial structure. Incision placement is typically inside the mouth to conceal the resultant scars. The implant is inserted through the incision and secures soft tissue.

Recovery After Cheek Augmentation

Downtime is about one week to allow healing and some swelling to resolve. There is no incision outside. Mouth rinse care is similar to if you had a dental/gum procedure performed. Medications may be prescribed to alleviate discomfort and promote healing of the tissues, but the pain is minimal.
