How Dermal Fillers Work
While Botox® and Dysport® basically tone the upper brow and remove crow's feet and worry lines, most of the other injectables, which contain hyaluronic acid, are used primarily to add volume to and smooth the facial skin.
Hyaluronic Acid: A Key Ingredient in Many of the Fillers
Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that occurs in the connective soft tissues of the body. With the progression of time, this naturally-occurring substance begins to dwindle, which causes the face to lose tone and elasticity. Therefore, any dermal fillers containing hyaluronic acid will add volume to the area where they are injected or smooth the site of wrinkles or fine lines.
Other Injectable Ingredients
Among the above-listed fillers, only Botox®, Dysport®, Radiesse®, and the Micro-Droplet Fat Injections contain other kinds of skin-smoothing ingredients. The main ingredient in Radiesse® is calcium hydroxyapatite while Micro Droplet Fat Injections use a patient's body fat from another site, such as the hips or thighs.
