The lower periocular area is prone to wrinkle development due to the unique characteristics of the skin. It is ten times thinner than the skin on other parts of the face, so the effects of collagen break down and muscle contractions are more significant. Blepharoplasty is a surgical intervention that reduces under eye wrinkles by tightening the skin and removing any excess fat that contributes to an aged appearance.

Contributing Factors for Wrinkles in the Lower Periocular Area

Skin undergoes aging due to chronological and environmental factors. From a chronological perspective, the body produces less of the essential proteins needed to maintain the skin’s appearance, such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. The combined effect results in rigidity in collagen fibers and a reduction in lipid cell size. Photoaging also contributes to wrinkle development as damaging UVA and UVB light modifies cell structure and other properties. As the skin structure weakens, daily habits are more likely to exacerbate the development of wrinkles.

Blepharoplasty for Under Eye Wrinkles

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the lower periocular region. This alleviates sagging in the area to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. The procedure is recommended for patients who are in their mid-30s or older and showing signs of laxity in the lower periocular area. An incision is made along the lower rim of the eye to the outer corner. Fat is excised, and the skin is tightened with any excess removed.

Recovery from Blepharoplasty

Healing varies by patient, but the average recovery takes seven to 10 days. During that time, the patient may use medications to ease discomfort. Swelling around the eyes is common and can be treated by gently placing cold compresses to the area. Lying down with the head elevated helps to reduce swelling. Pressure on the eyes should be avoided. Lubricating eye drops are used to help with dry eye symptoms. Patients are advised to avoid tasks that require their vision for an extended period, such as reading and watching television.
