Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) in Syracuse, Rochester, NY

Double board-certified Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Sang W. Kim of the Natural Face™ Clinics, provide blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, for patients residing in the areas of Syracuse metropolitan area and Central New York area including Ithaca and Rochester.

What is Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)?

Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is a type of plastic surgery that is used to eliminate excess muscle, skin, or fat from the eyelid area. The surgery is performed for the upper eyelids or lower eyelids or both. Blepharoplasty improves the appearance of bags under the eyes, droopy upper lids, or any vision difficulties caused by ptosis or eyelid drooping. While the surgery can correct drooping lids, it is not designed to correct wrinkling or droopy brows.

What Other Procedures Are Combined with Eyelid Surgery?

Because eyelid surgery is designed to only correct bags or drooping lids, it is often combined with a facelift or brow lift to improve one’s facial appearance or correct crow’s feet or sagging jowls.

Why Is the Surgery Recommended?

As people age, excess skin tends to form in the area of the eye, which causes the skin to lose elasticity. In turn, fatty deposits can accumulate beneath the dermis. As a result, the eyes will begin to look older, more puffy, tired, or wrinkled. Therefore, eyelid surgery can restore a refreshed and more youthful appearance to the eyes.

Who Are Good Candidates for Eyelid Surgery?

People who are physically healthy and at least 35 years old are typically the best candidates for eyelid surgery. Patients with certain conditions, such as high blood pressure, dry eyes, or cardiovascular disease, often must bypass the procedure. In addition, the supporting framework around the eyes may preclude a candidate from undergoing the surgery. However, if you are in good health and exhibit drooping or sagging upper or lower lids, surgery usually can help.

What Does the Procedure Involve?

During the procedure, the surgeon will make very small incision along the creases of the upper lid as well as, in some instances, along the lower rim of the eye. If fatty tissue is removed, then the surgeon will perform what is called transconjunctival eyelid surgery, which places a small incision just inside the eye’s lower rim. The incision frequently extends to the outer corner of the eye. Fatty and muscle tissue are separated so the excess fat can be removed. The procedure is performed using a local anesthetic and a relaxing sedative.

How Long Is the Recovery Time?

Recovery time for eyelid surgery generally takes seven to ten days.

What Does the Recovery Process Involve?

After the surgery, the patient is advised to take pain medication to alleviate any discomfort, use cold compresses and eye drops, elevate the head, and refrain from watching TV.
